As part of the home buying and/or selling process you must contact your local utilities and establish service (if you are buying) or disconnect service (if you are selling). This helpful resource page will guide you on timelines for doing this, as well as provide you with contact information so that you can easily take care of all of your utility set-ups. Find contacts for utilities in the Charlotte and surrounding areas.
Buyers, you will want to begin setting up your utilities after your Due Diligence Period is over (in NC) or approximately a week and a half to 2 weeks from your closing date. You will want to establish your service to begin ON THE DAY OF YOUR CLOSING.
Sellers, you will want to call after your Due Diligence Period is over (in NC) or approximately 2 weeks before your closing date. You will want to request that your service be terminated on the day AFTER your closing. Leaving the utilities in place until the day after closing this ensures your utilities remain on during the buyers’ walk-through and doesn’t cause any delays in your closing process.
