Moving can be a stressful and overwhelming experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Our resource page is designed to provide you with all the things you need to make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, we have the information, tips, and tools you need to help you plan, prepare and execute your move with ease. From packing tips and checklists to advice on hiring movers and finding the right moving supplies, our website is your one-stop shop for all things related to moving. Getting Started

This timeline was created to help plan for your move.  Timelines can often be shorter than 8 weeks, especially if you are purchasing a home.  The Zahn Group can help you with planning if you are moving in less than 8 weeks.

8 Weeks

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Create a digital folder for moving day
    • Store Files You need to have accessible on moving day
    • Use Google Drive, Dropbox, or a similar online hosting service
    • What to put in this file: Photos of quotes, receipts, moving documents, photos of valuables, photos of important furniture in case of damage
  • Get an estimate from a moving company
  • Budget for your move
  • Assess your new home
    • What is parking like for the movers at your new home
    • Do you need permits for the moving van parking
    • Does your community have certain move in days or times
    • What are the measurements of the rooms in your new home (for furniture placement)
  • Request time off from work
  • Go through your items and purge things you don’t need or want anymore
  • Begin to separate out items you will move yourself
4 Weeks

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Consider moving insurance
  • Begin to clean out perishable items
  • Begin making arrangements to change the address on your accounts or change/cancel memberships (see our Moving Checklist to help with this)
  • Gather all essential documents in one place, so you know where they are
1 Week

1 Week Before Moving Day

  • Get Rid of Leftover Food
  • Clean the home you are leaving
  • Make sure you have cash for the move (you will need to tip your movers)

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Moving Yourself?  Begin to enlist friends and family to help (make sure to plan on supplying food and drinks as a thank you)
  • Using a moving company?  Book your move
  • Begin collecting supplies
    • Check on your current neighborhood social media pages and see if anyone is giving away supplies from a recent move
    • Order the additional supplies you may need
    • Check out The Zahn Group’s moving resources
  • Begin Packing Your Boxes
    • Don’t Forget to Label Your Boxes
    • DON’T PROCRASINATE – packing takes longer that you anticipate
    • Pack a little bit each day
2 Weeks

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Dispose of hazardous materials (moving companies won’t move these) – Propane tanks, paint, etc
  • Notify Utility Service  Providers to cancel service at your current residence on your moving day (be sure to provide an address for final billing).
  • Set-up Utility Service at Your New Place (Check out our resources below)
  • Set-up mail forwarding 
  • Return borrowed items from neighbors
  • Update your addresses  with financial institutions, medical professionals, etc.  Use our Moving Checklist to make sure you have everything covered 
Moving Day
  • Protect floors and carpets 
  • Be available for the movers to answer any questions
  • Direct the movers to the correct rooms with your boxes and furniture at your new home
  • Don’t forget to tip your movers when they are done
  • Unpack essentials (here’s where the labeling comes in handy)
    • Unpack bedding
    • Unpack toiletries
    • Unpack medications
    • Unpack pet supplies
